Stills of Joy

Are you getting outdoors this summer?

Yes, it’s hot out! But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t get outside this summer. On June 4th I was invited to photograph a national trail day event held by the American Hiking Society. This group is Culture Queen Outdoors, led by Jennifer Michelle, out of Charlotte, NC. We traveled to Brevard, North Carolina into Pisgah National Forest. There were multiple waterfalls to explore.

It’s something about being out in nature that has the tendency to clear my mind. Marching up these trails was difficult, but once we made it safely to our destination (and back down) I felt accomplished. Like if I can climb up these mountains and waterfalls, there is no reason I can’t pass my next test or complete my next project.

It was also empowering to see Black Women taking to the trails. We were taking up space not conventionally held by us. The outdoors are a safe place for us too.

All the photos in this gallery were taken by Bryanna Joy.

One of my photos even made it to the Charlotte Post for an article discussing air quality with quotes from Jennifer Michelle.
